Real Assets Credit

The RAC group is a global credit investor in public and private markets in the following asset classes: real estate (first mortgages, b-notes, mezzanine debt, preferred equity and single-asset CMBS), infrastructure (project finance, loan finance and bond finance), and sustainable energies (senior debt, subordinated debt, preferred equity and mineral royalties).

The group focuses on complex transactions requiring customized solutions, with target positions of $100 million to $500 million and flexible hold periods with maturities generally less than 15 years.

Geoffrey Souter

Managing Director, Head of Real Assets Credit

Geoffrey currently leads the Real Assets Credit group responsible for credit investments in real estate, infrastructure and sustainable energies. In addition to helping develop and implement our global private real estate debt platform, he has helped lead the expansion of our investments in a broad range of senior and subordinated debt products secured by high-quality real assets in markets across the Americas, Europe and Asia.

Prior to joining CPP Investments in 2010, he spent four years at RBS Greenwich Capital and was a board member of RBS’s Global Real Estate Finance Group, responsible for its U.S. debt portfolio. Previously, Geoffrey worked at JPMorgan in real estate finance-related roles in New York and London, departing as head of real estate capital markets.

Geoffrey holds a BA (Hons) in Urban Development from Western University and an MS in Real Estate Development from Columbia University.

Umang Patel

Managing Director, Real Assets Credit

Umang focuses on public and private market credit investments in real estate, energy and resources, infrastructure and renewables.

Prior to joining CPP Investments in 2006, he worked in real estate corporate finance and real estate audit.

Umang holds a BMath in Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy and an MAcc from the University of Waterloo. He is a CFA charterholder and a Chartered Professional Accountant.

Corey Albert

Managing Director, Real Assets Credit

Corey focuses on private and public market credit investments in real estate across North and South America. In his prior roles at CPP Investments, Corey was responsible for our real estate equity investments in Canada, the U.S., and Brazil, including the opening of the regional office in São Paulo.

Prior to joining CPP Investments in 2011, Corey worked at Trez Capital Corporation, a middle-market real estate investment and finance firm based in Vancouver, BC.

Corey holds a BComm in Real Estate from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia.

Chris Moad

Managing Director, Real Assets Credit

Chris focuses on private market credit investments in real estate across the Americas. Before that, he focused on building the Brazilian real estate investment program while located in São Paulo.

Prior to joining CPP Investments in 2006, he was with Oxford Properties.

Chris holds a BA (Hons) from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., and an MSc from the London School of Economics.

Paul Shopiro

Managing Director, Real Assets Credit

Paul focuses on public and private market credit investments in real estate, energy and resources, infrastructure and renewables.

Prior to joining CPP Investments in 2008, he worked in the Americas Special Situations Group at Goldman Sachs, where he reviewed and executed on numerous debt and equity investments in a variety of different industries.

Paul holds BComm and BA degrees from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont.

Akio Kamata

Managing Director, Real Assets Credit

Akio focuses on public and private market credit investments in infrastructure and renewables. Akio was previously part of the infrastructure team based in Australia, originating, executing and managing investments across transportation, utility, energy and telecom infrastructure sectors.

Prior to joining CPP Investments in 2010, Akio held senior finance roles at Macquarie Group in its listed toll road fund and Babcock & Brown in its listed power fund. Prior to that, Akio worked at Ernst & Young in Australia, the U.S. and Vietnam.

Akio holds a BComm from Monash University, a Master of Applied Finance from Macquarie University and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.

Constantin Mayer

Managing Director, Real Assets Credit

Constantin focuses on public and private market credit investments in real estate.

Prior to joining CPP Investments in 2013, he worked in the real estate structured finance and investment banking groups at Barclays Capital in London.

Constantin holds a BA (Hons) in Politics and an MA in International Business Management from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Kyle Berg

Managing Director, Real Assets Credit

Kyle focuses on private and public market credit investments in energy, resources, power, and renewables.

Prior to joining CPP Investments in 2019, he worked at Greywolf Capital as a Managing Director focused on special situations credit and equity investments.

Kyle holds a BComm from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia and is a Leslie Wong Fellow of the UBC Portfolio Management Foundation.
