Investment Science

The Investment Science team supports the acceleration of value creation potential across the Fund by partnering with other Departments to execute data analytics in addition to enhancing research and innovation, and leading the development and procurement of the required technology, tooling, and data capabilities to achieve overall data and analytics goals.

Our Team

The Investment Science team is comprised of professionals based in Toronto.

Daniel Wroblewski

Managing Director, Head of Alpha Generation Lab, Investment Science

In his role, Daniel leads the work of the Alpha Generation Lab in partnership with investment departments across the Fund to find transformational ways of generating alpha (returns above the market benchmark).

Prior to joining CPP Investments in 2021, Daniel was Chief Architect and Chief of Staff at EQT, where he led the work on Motherbrain, a data and machine learning platform used to source deals in private markets. Earlier he worked as a technical director for a mobile game studio at King, the company behind Candy Crush. Daniel’s deep experience in innovation includes roles as a software engineer and technical lead.

Daniel attended the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, where he studied Engineering Physics.

Andrew Akers

Managing Director, Investment Science – Research & Partnerships

Andrew is a Managing Director in the Alpha Generation Lab where he leads a strategic partnerships program to accelerate development of alpha-generating technology capabilities across asset classes and strategies.  He joined CPPIB in 2017 in Corporate Strategy, where he was responsible for enterprise strategy and strategic initiatives.

Prior to joining CPP Investments, Andrew worked in corporate strategy at Scotiabank and as an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company where he led teams serving clients on corporate strategy, organizational design, and restructuring in the institutional investing, basic materials, and energy sectors.

Andrew obtained his B.A.Sc in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo and his MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.

Brendon Freeman

Managing Director, Investment Science – Alpha Generation Lab

Brendon leads research in the Alpha Generation Lab to create transformational approaches to generate alpha across investment departments. Prior to his current role, Brendon spent 10 years in quantitative equity strategies doing quantitative research across alpha, risk, and portfolio construction.

Prior to joining CPP Investments, Brendon held roles at TD Asset Management and TD Securities conducting research in asset allocation and electronic market making in options markets.

Brendon holds a Bachelor of Mathematics/Business Administration and Master of Quantitative Finance from the University of Waterloo. He is also a CFA Charterholder.

Raheel Janjua

Managing Director, Investment Science – Alpha Generation Lab

Raheel leads Investment Innovation within the enterprise-focused Investment Science group. His primary focus is to identify, incubate and deliver alpha generating outcomes across public and private asset classes for the long-term benefit of CPP Investments.

Prior to joining CPP Investments in 2019, Raheel led analytics at Google Canada where he helped Canada’s leading organizations accelerate their analytics and digital transformation capabilities. Before Google, he worked at The Boston Consulting Group where he advised a broad range of Financial Services, Private Equity and Retail organizations on strategy, M&A and large-scale business transformations. Raheel has also held multiple business and operational leadership as well as engineering roles at Schlumberger.

Raheel holds an undergrad in electronics engineering from GIK Institute and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Martin Young

Managing Director Investment Science - Investment Engineering

Martin Leads the Investment Engineering team in the Investment Science group.  Martin has been with CPP Investments since 2009 in a variety of public-markets facing teams, delivering value through the use of data and analytics.

Prior to CPP Investments, Martin worked at Fortress Investments, systematizing trading models for a quantitative relative value fund.

He has a BA in Information Systems.
